The plan was to get moving this morning as soon as the boys woke up, at 7am. Well, they slept in and we didn’t wake up until 7:40. Nice sleeping guys! Tor and I were doing the last minute preparations for pulling away and Lars and Odin were in the play enclosure on the aft berth. Lars started crying and when I went to investigate, he had a small wound under his left eye that was bleeding. We have no idea what happened, but after a quick cuddle he was back to his happy self. Poor little dude!
We pulled away from Baraka and were on our way out of Wigham Cove by 8am. As we got out into Seaforth Channel, we got some ocean swell, but soon we were able to tuck into Reid passage and get out of the swell. In Seaforth Channel we saw 2 humpback whales! It was very exciting. We saw them blow a couple of times.
In Percival Narrows there was quite a bit of tidal disturbance in the water and with it some swell that seemed to wake Lars from his morning nap after only about 45 minutes. Odin kept sleeping and sleeping and had a 1:45 minute nap. Wow. Fortunately Lars was in great spirits and played in the cockpit with Papa and didn’t have any problem with his life jacket. Good!
Soon the wind picked up a bit from behind and we were planning on a relatively short mileage day, so we took the opportunity to sail. It was great! Wing on wing with the mizzen and the main. I was down below with the boys, but I sure do love to hear the sounds of our boat moving through the water without the engine noise.
Too soon the wind died and we struck sail and motored again. Tor put the boys down for their nap and it’s too bad we didn’t think about the timing more. We were close to our anchorage and if they fell asleep, we didn’t want the noise of anchoring to wake them up. We went back and forth on what to do, slowing down, speeding up, altering course for other sightseeing, but eventually it sounded like the boys just weren’t falling asleep, so we booked it for the anchorage and got the anchor down and set. By this point it had been close to an hour since Tor put them down for their nap and they were STILL awake! Tor insisted I take the dinghy for a row since I was getting uptight. I got to shore and heard crying, so I rowed back and by that point Lars had fallen asleep, but Odin was still struggling. I went back to shore and talked with Julia and Matt of Wecantoo a Westsail 32 we’ve seen a few times since we shared the Fury Cove anchorage with them. Though Tor tried to help Odin get to sleep, it didn’t work and Lars woke up after only 30 minutes. Fortunately they both had good afternoons. Things are a changin’ in nap land!
I got two loaves of bread made and pineapple peanut stew and brown rice for dinner. Baraka pulled into the bay and anchored close by but we didn’t raft up. We ate dinner in the cockpit and got the boys to bed a little early given the afternoon nap fiasco. They fell asleep quickly and quietly (thank goodness!), and Tor and I played gin rummy. Tor kicked my ass, again. Damn.
We will listen to the 9:30pm weather forecast and then hit the sack. If the weather forecast sounds reasonable, we plan to go to Bottleneck Inlet on Finlayson Channel tomorrow night after making our way through Fjordlands. I’m looking forward to it. Hopefully we get sun like we did today, it would make pretty places even prettier.
