Alaska Trip Day 20

6/4/11
Beales Bay, Cunningham Island, B.C.
Miles travelled:  54

We left Fury Cove when we woke up this morning at 7am.  We knew we were going to meet up with Greg and Nicole from Baraka sometime today because we had had some garbled radio conversations with them and knew they weren’t too far away in Sea Otter Inlet.  We headed north and at one point were sure we were going to be stopped by the Canadian Coast Guard when their vessel took a 180 degree turn and pointed right at us and then called us on the radio.  It turns out that they were doing surveys and called us to ask us to get out of their way since their maneuverability was limited.  Sure thing Sir!

We met up with Baraka outside of Sea Otter Inlet around 11am and it was a sight for sore eyes.  It had been 2 months since we had seen Greg and Nicole and it was sure good to see them!  The weather report called for some pretty high winds from the NW so we discussed where to go for the night and decided on Beales Bay in Gunboat Passage as a good protected place for a NW blow.

We made our way up Fitz Hugh Sound and it was relatively uneventful, until we saw a whale just before turning down Gunboat Passage.  We think it was a Grey Whale and we actually saw it blow and we also saw its flukes as it dove.  I’ve only ever seen Orcas, so this was super cool.  We also had an indication of just how deep these fjords are, the whale was right at the edge of the water and still seemed to have plenty of depth.

We pulled into Beales Bay and got anchored by about 4:30pm.  We rafted up with Baraka and both of us put out our anchors.  We fed the boys dinner of black beans, bread and roasted sweet potato.   Once we got the boys to bed, Tor and I headed over to Baraka to eat the dinner Nicole made us, so nice!  We had chow mein as a tasty way to use up some of the overabundance of bean sprouts she grew.  We had a nice evening of catching up.

Motoring up Fitz Hume Sound

It was a long motor and the boys were asleep...time to read my kindle!

Baraka motoring north

It got really warm down below thanks to the diesel stove, so two naked boys came up to see our progress through Gunboat Passage

Snug in our safe anchorage rafted to Baraka
