Alaska Trip Day 82

9/3/11
Swanson Bay, B.C.
Miles Travelled:  36

We are refreshed and back in the groove of travelling this way again.  Our time in Bishop Bay was just what we needed.

We had a leisurely morning and left the dock about 9:40 am.  The sky looked promising as we motored out of the bay and it turned out to be a nice day.  We are in fjord country and it’s kind of neat to be able to get so very close to shore and still have 100 or more feet of water beneath you…though it doesn’t make for good anchoring.  The places to anchor are few and far between, Swanson Bay looks to be the best anchorage in the area according to the guidebook so we headed there.

We stopped by severely dilapidated Butedale because we heard in Hartley Bay that they have ice for sale.  The float we tied to was really sketchy and the buildings are falling down everywhere.  It was originally a cannery built in 1909 and last used in 1969.  There is a caretaker who lives there year round and he had a buddy with him.  They certainly live a different lifestyle, but they were very nice.  The caretaker had turned off the deep freeze a couple of days ago, but he still had a decent sized block of ice that he sold us for $3.  It turned out to be the perfect size for our icebox.  Sweet!

We arrived in Swanson Bay around 4:30pm and while I made sure the boys got supper, Tor changed the oil in the engine.  It made for a hectic dinner time, but we were able to get it all done.  Perky the engine was happy, and Lars and Odin had nice full bellies of navy bean soup.

It was a beautiful evening and Tor and I would have loved to sit out on deck after the boys were asleep, but didn’t due to the bugs.  The way they swarmed on us as soon as we got anchored, we ran down below and shut ourselves in.

What is left of Butedale
