Miles Travelled: 31
Today was our last day in Glacier Bay. We were sad to leave, but we are very excited about Grandma Cheryl and Grandpa Ralph in Sitka, so that takes some of the sting out of it. It didn’t seem like Glacier Bay wanted us to leave either…we got stuck in a vicious contrary current that we weren’t quite expecting and we actually saw a low speed of 1.6 kts over ground. Yikes.
It was sunny and beautiful with a light west wind and man oh man were there humpback whales in Icy Strait after exiting the park. Wow! There were something like 12 of them actively feeding and we even saw a mama and calf. The way the mama and calf were right together, hanging out on the surface, it seemed like the calf was probably nursing. So sweet.
The trip to Hoonah went quickly and we ended up slowing down so that we wouldn’t arrive in Hoonah too early and disturb the boys’ nap. Our timing ended up being perfect, the boys had a great ~2 hour nap and we tied up at the transient moorage dock and were ready to hit the town for groceries and, we hoped, halibut pizza for dinner. Unfortunately we discovered that halibut pizza wouldn’t be happening since the restaurant had changed hands and the recipe didn’t go with the restaurant. Oh well, salmon tacos on the boat were much cheaper.
We got diapers washed and groceries purchased so it was a productive day in Hoonah.
Beautiful day, good looking boat, on our way into Hoonah
Funky looking "tree" on island near Hoonah...cell phone tower in disguise?
Odin looks way too cute in my hat!
